I was thinking that I like to promote not just books I like, but also the authors. They work hard to give us book lovers more books! I certainly can't write one and I appreciate them. So I decided to do a post on Fridays on individual authors of books I have read. No order to who I am featuring, just whoever I am reading at the time or a new book, or whoever comes to my mind that day.
I am starting with Julie Mulhern. I participated in an online Launch Party last evening for her seventh book in The Country Club Murder series. She has also written two books in the Haunting Desire series and recently launched another series - A Poppy Fields Adventure.
About Julie: She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean--and she's got an active imagination. Truth is--she's an expert at calling for take-out, she grumbles about walking the dog and the dust bunnies under the bed have grown into dust lions.
About The Country Club Murders: The series first came out in 2015 and currently there are seven books in the series. "The series is set in 1970's Kansas City, Missouri. The main character is Ellison Russell who offers us a glimpse of life behind the scenes in the Country Club set. It’s 1974 and Ellison Russell’s life revolves around her daughter and her art. She's a mother with strong opinions, has a Weimaraner named Max who plots to take over her house, and a husband... she'd like to forget."
Note the names of the books in the series: What do you notice about them? :)

I loved this book As I was a teenager in the 70's, I love the references to food, drinks, clothing, and general culture of the 70's. Ellison is a very likeable character. You are quickly are on her side. The relationship between she and her mother is interesting and very much a part of who Ellison is. I love how each chapter ends with a statement that makes you want to keep reading such as "I've never seen anymore look more worried", "He planned to follow me", "I didn't care about that anymore...A huge mistake". The writing is very good, easy to follow, fast paced and a well developed mystery. I am almost ready to start Guaranteed to Bleed. (I need more book time!)
About Fields' Guide to Abduction: A Poppy Field Adventure #1:
"Poppy Fields, Hollywood IT girl extraordinaire, agreed to a week at the newest, most luxurious resort in Cabo. After all, what's better than the beach when a girl is feeling blue? When Poppy is abducted, she'll need all her smarts, all her charm, and a killer Chihuahua, to save herself in this new series from the USA TODAY bestselling author of The Country Club Murders.
Dead body #1 found in bed, with me. That was a shock.
Dead body #2 found in bed, not with me. That was a relief.
Dead body #3 died telling me I’m a lousy actress. I already knew that.
Dead body #4 died trying to kill me.
Dead body #5 died kidnapping me.
Dead body #6 died guarding me.
Dead body #7 was a really bad man.
Dead body #8 was an even worse man.

Dead body #8 was an even worse man.
That's a lot of dead bodies for a girl looking for a week's relaxation in Cabo. And, I’m probably leaving a few out—math isn’t my thing. Unless I can escape the cartel, I might be the next dead body."
I haven't read this yet but intend to. First, I love the name Poppy Fields. Second, I find the description hilarious.
About Haunting Desires books One and Two:
"New Orleans, 1902. A killer walks the streets of New Orleans, eviscerating men and leaving them in the streets, and for madam Trula Boudreaux, it's bad for business. Trula needs help but she's not prepared for Zeke Barnes, the charming would-be savior who darkens her doorway-or the yearning he awakens. For while Trula knows well the delights of lust, she avoids love at all costs...
Investigating the killer was one thing, but Zeke can't help but be enchanted by the gorgeous mystery woman who runs an exclusive brothel. Caught between his duty to protect the city and his clear-as-day desire for Trula, Zeke sets about capturing Trula's heart-or at least a place in her bed. But with every moment Trula resists, Zeke falls into greater danger.
For his investigation into the haunted city and madam doesn't just risk his heart but both their lives."
"New Orleans, 1903. Before he died, Christine Lambert's father won a piece of eight in a poker game. How was he to know the coin was part of a puzzle that when solved revealed the location of Jean Laffite's treasure? Now Christine must find the treasure before a killer beats her to it.
Matthias Blake is as out of place in New Orleans as a raven in a flock of hummingbirds. He has serious work to do and Christine is a distraction he doesn't need. But how can he resist a lady in distress--even if that lady can win a fight armed with a hat pin?
Together they must overcome their pasts and defeat dark forces sent by a shadowy evil. In the process, they just might find the greatest treasure of all..."

I haven't read these books, but from the reviews I saw, people like them, and they have mystery, romance with some paranormal thrown in.
We had a blast during the online launch party last evening. We got to ask Julie questions, and had fan Q&A.
Here is Julie's website it you want to find out more about her books.

I recommend her books!
Thank you! So glad you're enjoying the books!!!
ReplyDeleteGayle, I'm so glad you are doing this! Love it! I actually saw Julie at Left Coast Crime a couple of years ago during one of those events that had about a million authors tell us about their books in 2 minutes. Anyway, I do remember telling her that I had blogging friends that loved her '70's series. I've had a copy of the first book since that time, but haven't read it yet. I must do that! And the new Poppy book sounds wonderful - who wouldn't love a killer Chihuahua? I'll watch for these posts. As I said, love the idea!!
